CITY OF LAGUNA BEACH: Engineering Technician

RATE OF PAY: $61,332.00 - $86,316.00 Annually

POSITION: The City of Laguna Beach Public Works Department is seeking a motivated, results-oriented individual to fill the position of Engineering Technician. This role involves a variety of duties and responsibilities in the fields of civil engineering design, public works administration, engineering technical assistance, public works permitting and inspection, computer-aided design (CAD), and geographic information systems (GIS). The Engineering Technician will report to a division manager within the Public Works Department or as assigned by the Director. Additionally, this position may supervise interns or part-time staff as necessary..

  • Reviewing permit applications and associated plans for compliance and issuing public works permits.

  • Preparing and reviewing plans, cross-sections, profiles, diagrams, maps, exhibits, graphs, and charts using computer-aided design (CAD) or other computer applications.

  • Conducting field inspections.

  • Providing support at the public counter.

  • Responding to public inquiries in person, electronically, or over the telephone.

  • Conducting or participating in studies and field surveys in the collection and compilation of a wide variety of data.

  • Communicating with utility companies and outside agencies.


Any combination of education and experience demonstrating the ability to effectively and successfully perform the duties of the position is considered qualifying. A typical combination is as follows:

  • Education: A high school diploma or equivalent supplemented by college-level coursework in engineering, mathematics or a related field. A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field from an ABET accredited program is desirable.

  • Experience: Prior civil engineering, municipal government, and/or public works construction and inspection experience is desirable.

  • License/Certificate Requirements: Due to the performance of some field duties, which may require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid California Driver’s license and an acceptable driving record are required.
