The City of Laguna Beach Public Works & Utilities Department is seeking an experienced and dedicated professional to join our team as a Maintenance Lead Worker in the Landscape Maintenance Division. This role provides the opportunity to lead and oversee a crew, performing a variety of maintenance tasks while ensuring the health and upkeep of public landscapes. Schedule:
May work a 5/40, 9/80, or other schedule as needed, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Key Responsibilities:
Supervise and lead field maintenance crews in daily operations.
Perform maintenance tasks alongside crew members in assigned areas.
Train and evaluate crew members, providing feedback and recommendations for improvement.
Organize, schedule, and oversee maintenance and repair projects to meet operational needs.
Ensure compliance with safety protocols and conduct regular safety meetings.
Maintain records of crew activities and prepare performance evaluations.
Respond to emergency calls during non-scheduled hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Division-Specific Responsibilities:
Buildings and Facilities Maintenance:
Perform tasks like plumbing, electrical repairs, HVAC maintenance, and cleaning public facilities.
Operate tools such as pressure washers, backhoes, and circular saws.
Landscape Maintenance:
Oversee Park and street landscaping, irrigation maintenance, pesticide application, and graffiti removal.
Operate mowers, trimmers, and other landscape equipment.
Street Maintenance:
Conduct road repairs, curb and gutter maintenance, and traffic control equipment installation.
Operate heavy equipment such as asphalt rollers, jackhammers, and skip loaders.
Qualifications:
Education:Â High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by courses in supervision or related fields.
Experience:
Considerable experience in public works maintenance or construction at the journey level.
At least six months of supervisory or team leadership experience.
Licenses/Certifications:
Valid California Class A or B driver’s license without restrictions on air brakes or automatic transmission.
Must pass a police background check, fingerprint check, and pre-employment medical and drug tests.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of public works methods, safety practices, and equipment operation.
Ability to supervise and train staff, foster teamwork, and perform journey-level maintenance tasks.
Proficiency in operating heavy equipment and office software (Windows-based systems).
Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Working Conditions:
Outdoor work with exposure to varying weather, noise, fumes, and hazardous materials.
Physical demands include lifting objects up to 50 pounds, standing or walking for extended periods, and operating heavy equipment.
Must respond to emergencies and work irregular hours as required.
