JOB TITLE: Filed Service Engineer

REPORT TO: Multiple Managers


FLSA STATUS: Non-Excempt


JOB SUMMARY:

Plans coordinate activities concerned with installing and maintaining Electron Microscopes, Scanning Probe Microscopes, Ion Beam Microscopes, Mass Spectrometers, NMR Spectrometers, and / or Electron Beam lithography instrumentation, investigating and resolving customer reports of technical problems with equipment, and eliminating future operationall or service difficulties. This work may include use of manuals, guidelines, or other established procedures containing or related to highly technical matters that can be understood or interupted only by those with advanced or specialized knwledge or skills. In resolving work problems, discretion and independent judgment is required. Contacts are primarily with scientist and related personnel to exchange information, resolve problems and provide advice and guidance.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Installs new modified equipment at custtomer's facility to ensure full functionality according to specifications.

  • Independently plans and completes assignments; the District Manager defines objectives and priorities.

  • Reviews reports and documentation from customers inspects malfunctioning instrument to determine nature and scope of problem.

  • Sytemically analyzes findings to determine source of instrumentation problem and recommends repair, replacement or other corrective acation to District Manager.

  • Refers complex problems and concerns to appropriate individuals.

  • Consistently excercises discretion and independent judgment in resolving problems.

  • Provides on-site technical assistance to help trubleshoot and repair equipment.

  • Maintains appropriate confidentiality of information.

  • Must be punctual and timely in meeting all requirements of performance including but not limited to, attendance standards and work deadlines; beginning and ending assignments on time; and scheduled work breaks where applicable.

  • Must assume reponsilbility for providing timely, appropriate reponses to requests/suggestions/complaints or refer such comments to the appropriate persons.

  • When referring requets/suggestions/complaints to another individual, the emplyee must follow-up in writing to that individual and maintains an assesiblecopy of the referral or follows company guidelines.


TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

Approximately 30-50% travel is anticipated in this position. Travel may be required between company locations , to customer sites and attend conferences and trade shows. International travel may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS;

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge skill and or ability required. EDUCATION OR EXPERTISE:

Associate degree in an appropriate area of engineering and or science from accredited college or university; plus 6 months to 2 years related expertise and training; or equivalent combination of education and expertise.


OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply analog and digital electronics. In a particular, A1 Engineers knowledge and ability to apply principles of RF electronics . EO engineers shouls have knowledge andability principles of analog and digital electronics.

Ability to prepare reports and other appropriate documentation. Ability to analyze, plan and implement reports appropriate reccomendations where needed.

Solid mechanical understanding: ability to analyze, evaluate, and asses complex and interactive mechanical components.


LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.


REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standard ization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written oral, diagram, or schedule.


COMPUTER SKILLS:

Computer literacy required. Familiarity with web-based expense reporting, CRM and labor tracking systems preferred.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, RGISTRATIONS:

Valid driver's license and passport required. Must have the ability to obtain a goverment security clearence.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to sit. stand and use hands to handle or feel. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, clor vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

As a responsibility of this position, employee residences must be located within reasonable driving distance from JEOL customers. Geographic territories are defined by the District Managers and Senior Service Management subject to the approval of the VP & General Manager of the Service Division. Work is performed at client locations requiring the Field Engineer to travel to the client's business by car or airplane as appropriate. The work is performed in an office or laboratory environmen when the noise level is usually very quiet to mederate. Off hour support is required. Some contracts may require 24/7 support.
